What the ingredient quality score checks

Ingredient quality here means two things you can read on the label: the form of each ingredient and its amount. The form tells you which version of a nutrient is in the capsule, such as L-methylfolate in place of folic acid, or chelated iron. The amount tells you whether the dose is close to public guidance. A proprietary blend scores lower because the milligrams are hidden. Brands with the same quality score are listed by overall score.

Common questions about ingredient quality

What is the difference between folic acid and L-methylfolate?

Folic acid is the synthetic form used in fortified foods and most public-health research, and the body converts it to the active form with help from an enzyme called MTHFR. L-methylfolate is that active form already. Eu Natural, WeNatal, and Ritual list methylfolate. Either way, check the mcg DFE number against the CDC's 400 mcg a day.

Which CoQ10 forms show up on labels?

CoQ10 is sold as ubiquinone or ubiquinol, and a clear label gives the form and the amount. Theralogix lists 250 mg of VESIsorb CoQ10 in TheraNatal OvaVite, and Bird&Be sells a 600 mg dose as an add-on.

Does the quality score test what is in the bottle?

No. It reads the printed label for forms and amounts. Whether the bottle matches the label is a testing question, answered by seals such as NSF certification.

Why does a blend lower the score?

A blend gives one total for several ingredients, so the form may be listed while the amount of each is not. Eu Natural prints its botanicals as one blend total, which lowers its quality score.
